From Campus to Corner Office
If you’re a final-year student or recent graduate who’s sent out dozens of applications and heard almost nothing back, you’ve probably concluded that the job market is simply bad right now. The data tells a more specific — and honestly more useful — story: the market isn’t short on jobs. It’s short on graduates who can demonstrate they’re ready for them.
The India Skills Report 2026, the 13th edition of an annual nationwide employability assessment prepared by ETS in collaboration with CII, AICTE, and AIU, and drawing on over 100,000 candidate assessments alongside responses from more than a thousand employers, found that employer hiring intent for freshers in FY 2026–27 stands at 40%, up sharply from 29% the year before. IT alone is projected to lead fresher hiring at 35% of new intake — more than double last year’s cross-industry share of 14% — with BFSI, manufacturing, pharma and healthcare, and FMCG following close behind.
That’s not a hiring freeze. That’s a hiring market actively expanding its appetite for entry-level talent. Which raises the real question this article is actually about: if demand is rising this fast, why does it still feel impossible to get a callback?
The Gap Isn’t Jobs. It’s Readiness — And the Data Is Specific About Where.
National employability — the share of graduates assessed as genuinely job-ready by the report’s Global Employability Test — has risen to 56.35% in 2026, up from 54.81% the year before and 46.2% in 2022. That’s real, measurable progress. It also means that even in a good year, close to 44% of graduates assessed are not yet considered job-ready by the standard employers themselves are using.
The report’s breakdown by stream is where this becomes genuinely actionable rather than just discouraging. Computer science and IT graduates sit at roughly 80% and 78% employability respectively — driven by AI, data analytics, and automation-related roles. Engineering (BE/BTech) graduates sit around 70%. Commerce graduates have climbed sharply to nearly 63%, up from 55%, largely on the back of BFSI and fintech demand. Science sits around 61%, arts around 55.6% — both benefiting from the growth of digital and interdisciplinary roles. Further down, ITI graduates sit at roughly 46% and polytechnic graduates at roughly 33%, both improving year over year but still meaningfully behind.
The pattern across every one of these numbers is the same: employability isn’t a fixed property of a degree. It’s a moving, stream-specific gap between what a curriculum teaches and what employers in that field are actually screening for — and in 2026, that gap is closing fastest exactly where graduates are pairing their degree with visible, applied, current skills, not where the degree alone is doing the work.
What “Job-Ready” Actually Means to an Employer
This is the part most campus placement conversations skip, because it’s less comfortable than talking about grades: a degree signals that you completed a curriculum. It doesn’t, by itself, signal that you can do the specific things a role requires on day one. Employers assessing “employability” in reports like this one are testing something closer to applied competence and communication than academic knowledge — which is exactly why a computer science graduate with a strong GPA and no demonstrable project work can score lower than a commerce graduate with a modest GPA and a portfolio of applied, current skills.
Think of readiness as three separate layers, because each one requires a different kind of preparation, and most students only invest in the first.
Credential — your degree, your marks, your institution. This is necessary, and it’s also the layer every one of your peers has. It gets you into the applicant pool. It does almost nothing to differentiate you within it.
Demonstrated skill — the applied, current evidence that you can actually do relevant work: a real project, a specific certification tied to a genuine industry demand (not a generic one), a portfolio, a case competition, freelance or internship experience. This is the layer the India Skills Report’s stream-by-stream data is really measuring, and it’s the layer where deliberate effort moves the needle fastest, because it’s largely under your control regardless of which stream you’re in.
Communicated fit — your ability to make a recruiter or interviewer understand, quickly and specifically, that your credential and your demonstrated skill actually solve their problem. This is a resume that leads with evidence instead of coursework, a LinkedIn profile that’s discoverable for the specific roles you want, and an interview answer that positions you rather than recites your transcript. This is also the layer where genuinely capable students most often lose ground — not because they lack substance, but because they’ve never been taught to translate it into language a hiring manager immediately understands.
Most institutional career preparation stops at Credential and gestures vaguely at Communicated Fit through a single resume-writing workshop. The India Skills Report’s own findings suggest the real, closable gap sits squarely in the middle layer — and in how well the first two layers get translated into the third.
Why This Matters More in Some Streams Than Others
If you’re a computer science or engineering student, the market is doing some of this work for you — AI, data analytics, and automation-related roles are pulling demand upward across your stream generally, which is part of why employability there already sits at 70–80%. Your risk is complacency: assuming the stream’s overall momentum will carry an individually undifferentiated profile.
If you’re a commerce, science, arts, ITI, or polytechnic student, the stream-level numbers are working against you by default, which makes the middle layer — demonstrated, applied skill — disproportionately valuable rather than optional. A commerce graduate who can point to a specific fintech-relevant project or certification is swimming with a rising current; a commerce graduate relying on the degree alone is swimming against one, even though the same current is lifting the stream as a whole.
There’s a further wrinkle worth naming honestly: employability gains have not been even across geography, and a meaningful share of the country’s higher-education aspirants come from smaller cities and towns where practical, industry-facing exposure has historically been harder to access than in metro institutions. Numbers like these come from an aggregate assessment; they can’t tell you which single decision to make next week. But they do triangulate a clear direction: the hiring appetite in FY 2026–27 is real and specifically concentrated in a small set of sectors — IT, BFSI, manufacturing, pharma and healthcare, FMCG — which means targeting your Demonstrated Skill development toward one of these, rather than developing generic, unfocused skills, will compound faster than spreading effort evenly.
